Optimising Voxel Meshes for Games Using Blender

This tutorial explains step by step how to clean up the geometry of voxel models in Blender to prepare them for export to game engines like Unreal, Godot or Unity.

[Edit - If you own Avoyd we recommend exporting to glTF Binary Mesh instead. This will both optimise and export to glTF for direct use in game engines.]

The tutorial covers the following:

  1. Use Avoyd to convert your voxel model to mesh for Unreal, Godot or Unity. (You can use the free to download Avoyd demo.)
  2. Optimise the mesh in Blender. [Edit - You can skip this step by using Avoyd 0.26+ with Best optimisation on export.]
  3. Use Blender to export to glTF for Unreal 5 and Godot, and to FBX for Unreal 4 and Unity, and follow our guides for importing and configuring the model in each engine.

[Edit 17 Mar 2025 - Avoyd Free v0.26 introduced the Best optimisation on obj export, so you do not need to optimise the mesh in Blender. Avoyd 0.26 (paid) adds export to glTF for games.]

We’ve just released Avoyd Free v0.26 with Best optimisation on obj export, so you do not need to manually optimise the mesh in Blender anymore.

Avoyd 0.26 (paid) adds export to optimised glTF. We recommend using the glTF format for exporting voxels to mesh directly to game engines.

Great Work , Keep it up!
